Tamara Harings' Professional Portfolio
I am a veteran Science Facilitator at Jane Long Elementary where I work with teachers and students from grades Kinder through Fifth. I have enjoyed teaching Science for 19 years now and look forward to many more years to come. Jane Long Elementary is nestled in downtown Richmond, Texas and is the oldest school in our district, nearly 110 years old. There is a great deal of history in our halls, however Science RULES our school!
These are my Lil' Science Lovers, Anthony (10) and Benjamin (4). Both have grown up in my lab and aspire to be famous scientist when they grow up! I learn so much from their explorations and try to create similar experiences with my students, true discovery. It is fullfilling to see the wonder in a childs eye, no matter who's child it is.

Educational Philosophy
To embrace the natural wonder of a child…
I believe that children are naturally curious and extremely observant. They see the world through unfiltered eyes, which allows them to be creative, open, trusting, and receptive. In my class, I want to always preserve this foundational essence.
To show mutual respect…
I strongly believe that WE are ALL equal on this earth; from the youngest to the oldest. In addition, I believe that showing respect for our youth is necessary in preserving their nature. That, through mutual respect, we provide a caring relationship, and create a safe environment where children will learn. I follow a “Code of Value” to foster respect. The posted code provides me and my students a constant reminder of HOW to show respect for one another:
Seek to be attentive
Seek peace and quiet so all can listen and work
Learn about each other and see to become friends
Respect one another’s differences
Treat one another as we want to be treated
Respect one another’s space
It’s okay to disagree sometimes
Use materials as they are meant to be used
To be stewards of the Earth…
I soulfully believe that the Earth is ours to care for, that it is our gift from God. Everything that we have has come from this great orb. Without a healthy ecology, how would mankind continue? Our ability to sustain our Earth is imperative to our future and all generations to come. Without it, what purpose would we have?
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the
air, and over the cattle, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
Genesis 1:26
Let us always remember to preserve childhood by showing mutual respect and caring for our earth.

ReflectionThe TagXedo Word Cloud creation was a fun way to express myself through visuals and words. As you look over the visual, you will notice some words are larger than others, which is significant of its importance to me. This was made at http://www.tagxedo.com/
Screen casting is a super tool for going over how to use technology. The screen cast that I created using Community Clips is an instructional clip on how to insert a chart into a Word doc. Sketch casting on the iPad is a digital white board. I was able to speak and explain water displacement so that students can watch and learn at home. This was made using EduCreations. Podcasting using Audacity is a useful tool when needing to share a voice message only. I was able to introduce Science Buddies in a fun and musical way. With the creation of this flipped online lesson, I learned how to develop a lesson that is partially online and partially face to face. I am able to teach my students a new concept with the use of various technologies that they access from a computer at home, while also continuing the lesson and additional enrichment face to face the next day when they return to class. Creating this totally online lesson plan taught me how to teach my students and evaluate them solely through technology and online learning. I'm looking forward to using this teaching tool so I will have more class time for them to actually do hands-on learning. ReflectionMaking a treasure hunt was a fun way to demonstrate incorporating
research with technology in the classroom. I learned how to create a document that guides students to multiple websites to find answers to various questions I created for them. I used blubbr to create a video/listening quiz over different habitats from around the world. This will allow me to preassess and determine prior knowledge levels. Through this online tool, I am able to assess student's knowledge of the terminology that goes along with this unit. I see great potential in this site and plan to use it often. ReflectionCreating QR Codes is an easy and fun way students can navigate through facts by scan quick response codes. It is a great motivation tool for kids and teachers.
The Weebly page is a super user friendly site that allowed me to set up my own webpage that parents and students can access. The kids love it! The stationary pieces that are created can be useful in parent, community, and student communication. I am working on created a brand for my Science Lab, so that when they see the SFSL Log, paw prints and Super Fab the Science Lab, they will immediately know it is from Ms. Haring's Science Lab. Along with the stationary pieces, I was as able to use Adobe Photoshop to create a quality banner for my online newsletter. I believe that as we do more and more online learning, we will need to refect a level of professionalism via the internet and not inperson. Therefore, having the "know how" will become increasingly important in our communication within the teaching realm. ReflectionA TEASe is a super fun way to introduce new ideas to my students. It encourages independent thinking and wonder without telling them exactly what to think about. The TEASe was a challenge for me to make because video editing is new to me. However, once I got the hang of it, I liked it.
The Collage is a great tool for students to present what they learned about in a class, about a chapter, a lesson, a unit, or just a thinking journal. I learned to make one with personal pics and how to change fonts! The stop motion animation videos are the BEST! I love watching my students create these living models. The music video is using a song by Marvin Gaye, The Ecology Song or Mercy, Mercy Me. The video was created to match the words in the song and send a message to all who watch. Using a non-linear powerpoint is a fabulous way to allow the viewer to self-direct his/her exploration of a topic and shows great potential in the classroom. I see it being used as a scavenger hunt tool or even a quiz/game show tool.
